Waterbury Area Trails Alliance (WATA) is a non-profit trail management organization based in Waterbury, VT and is operated under the umbrella of Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA). The organization is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and currently manages trails in two different local networks totaling more than 15 miles of singletrack.  

 

WATA is seeking a Part-Time Programs Director (PD) to support continued growth throughout our trail networks, ridership, financial health, and our mission. Competitive candidates will bring nonprofit experience as well as the skills, attributes, and energy necessary to furnish sustainable growth and management of our organization.

 

Responsibilities

 

Outreach & Relationship Management (50%)

  1. Be the primary liaison between WATA and the VT FPR, Town of Waterbury, private landowners, and professional trail building partners

  2. Maintain and build partnerships with the Waterbury community, Vermont mountain biking community, and WATA members

  3. Assist with growing WATA membership with a focus on diversity and being mindful of JEDI principles 

 

Network Maintenance & Long-term Strategy (25%)

  1. Work with the WATA Trails Committee to research trail corridors that have the ability to grow our current networks footprint

  2. Work with the District Stewardship Team while following the State’s proposal format to bring potential trail corridors to shovel ready 

  3. Support the WATA Trails Committee in maintaining and building trails:

    • Lead and support development of RFP’s, contracts, expectations, and future goals with trail builders

    • Support forecasting future maintenance, building projects, and provide a budget to help aid financial planning

    • Create a trail maintenance schedule for volunteer trail days and nights 

    • Participate in most scheduled trail maintenance events

  4. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and carry out our long-term strategic plan

 

Fundraising (15%)

  1. Lead and support board members on grant applications

  2. Work with the WATA Fundraising Committee to foster more organizational sponsors and maintain relationships with current sponsors 

  3. Work with private individual donors to increase capacity

 

Reporting, Communication & Board Involvement (10%)

  1. Attend each Board, Officer, and Committee meeting

  2. Attended meetings of pertinent partnering organizations when necessary

  3. Provide regular updates, expectations, and functional needs to the Board

 

Required Skills and Qualifications: 

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in recreation nonprofit work

  • Demonstrated ability to work with local and state-level government agencies to build strong relationships and support organizational goals

  • An above average understanding of trail management guidelines, maintenance, and building 

  • Ability to plan and execute projects with consideration of budgetary constraints

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to positively and professionally engage with a variety of audiences

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, MailChimp, social media platforms and a strong aptitude for new technological platforms

Position is located in Waterbury, VT.  Salary range is from $30,000-$36,000 based on qualifications and experience with an average of 25hrs per week, heavily weighted between April and October.
